Dion Ong bags bronze in Junior Balkan Math Olympiad

Dion Stephan Ong won a bronze medal at the 20th JBMO in Slatina, Romania

Dion Stephan Ong of (Cardoner) 9 Geronimo bagged a bronze medal at the 20th Junior Balkan Mathematical Olympiad (JBMO) held in Slatina, Romania last June 28, 2016. He received his medal at the awarding ceremony held on June 29, 2016.

As reported by ABS-CBN News, the Philippines was represented at the JBMO by a team of six Filipino math wizards, including Dion Stephan Ong. Team Philippines' haul included one gold, one silver, and three bronze medals. 

The other countries which competed in the 20th JBMO were Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Greece, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Romania, Serbia, Turkey, Kazakhstan, Indonesia, Turkmenistan, Saudi Arabia, Azerbaijan, France and Tajikistan. The Philippines placed 7th over-all.

Of the 122 math wizards who competed, 95 received medals: 11 golds, 27 silvers, and 57 bronzes.  

Dion Stephan Ong is one of the Ateneo de Manila's most bemedalled mathletes, winning medals in competitions both here and abroad since he was in grade school. Last January 30, Dion was conferred the University of New South Wales Medal (UNSW) as one of the top scorers in the 2015 International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS)- Mathematics. In September 2015, Dion won the Silver Award in the Grade Seven (Secondary 1) division of the Singapore and Asian Schools Math Olympiad (SASMO), which counted 2,412 participants from Singapore, Hong Kong, Bulgaria, Indonesia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Uzbekistan, Cambodia, Myanmar, and Brunei.  Dion in front of the oldest theater in Olt county in Slatina, Romania
