ALS CLASS OF 1998

After the special mass held at the St. Thomas More Chapel in honor of ALS Batch 1998, Fr. Joaquin Bernas and I formally welcomed the attending members of the batch at the atrium located on the ground floor of the APS Building, namely: Job Adrian Ambrosio, Kenneth L. Chua, Juan Carlos T. Cuna, Alexander C. Dy, Christina E. Reside, Luis MJ S. Romero-Salas, Ma. Victoria M. Sarmiento and Miguel U. Silos

“Welcome to the ALS Class of 1998. On behalf of the Administration and Staff of the Law School, thanks to everyone here tonight for having taken time out to join is in this small celebration leading up to the culmination of the 75th Diamond Jubilee on 06 June 2011.

“Although it was never intended, is quite symbolical that Class ’98 would be the very first batch to start the kick off. You will recall that it was your batch to graduate from the H.V. de la Costa campus of the Law School, before we moved to the Rockwell campus during the second semester of School Year 2008-2009.

“By the time you graduated in April of 1998, Dean Cynthia del Castillo was then in her last two years of a brilliant ten-year tenure as the Dean of the Law School that saw the start and the full-blooming of the J.D. Program, which today has truly become the gold standard of legal education in this country. We refer to Dean Cynthia as the “Mother of the Ateneo J.D. Program.” Today, no Law School in the Philippines can claim that it is within the premier league of Philippine Law Schoolunless it offers the Ateneo-type J.D. Program.

“Our records show that your batch began with about 180 Freshmen and ended at graduating with 119 in April, 1998:  Ms.  Dominique Isabel P. Gallego was your valedictorian, and Mr. Kenneth Chua, your salutatorian.

“If you will recall, your batch achieved a passing percentage of 88.44% in the Bar Examinations given that year, and garnered #6, #9 and #10 in the Top 10 Places: #6 – Kenneth Chua, 9th – Margie P. Colinayo, and 10th – Ambrosio L. Cantada II.

“In the 20-year period during which the Supreme Court has been issuing Statistical Data on Bar Examination Results, year 1998, together with years 1997 and 2009, were the only times that Ateneo Law School did not achieve the highest passing percentage. In all the 17 years, our Law School always achieved the highest percentage of passing in the Bar Examinations.

“Nevertheless, our pride in each of you has never waned through the years. And we hope that you will share with us tonight highlights of your days in the Law School as well as in the pursuit of your careers. We hope to document all sharings tonight both in video format that will be edited and compiled by the end of the year as well as in the cintra board project of the Ateneo Law Alumni Association.

“More importantly, we wish every one of you to participate in the program of activities that we have set for the year, especially in the celebration of the Blue Mass and the Program to Honor Law Alumni on 06 June 2011, which would be held right here in the Rockwell campus.”

Atty. Aleli Quirino, the President of ALAAI, welcomed the members of the class present and shared the activities lined-up by the Association in celebration of the 75th Diamond Jubilee, including encouraging them to purchase the commemorative car plates. Atty. Danny Cortina, the President of the Host Class (ALS 1987) for the Law Alumni Homecoming this year, invited the class to send a large representative of at least 30 members to join the proceedings that were going to be held at the Makati Shangri-La on    October 2011.

From the sharing we had that evening, we note the other highlights pertaining to ALS Class 1998:

  • Atty. Charlie Cuna is a Past President of the Ateneo Law Alumni Association Inc. (ALAAI), in year 2007.
  • Atty. Kenneth Chua has been in Quisumbing Torres for the last 12 years specializing in Labor practice and of course has made partner.
  • Atty. Miguel Silos, has remained in CVC Law , and one of the few Ateneans who has made partner, although more and more The Firm has been hiring more Ateneo lawyers as associates.
  • Three of their members, namely, Atty. Alexander C. Dy, Atty. Sarah Lou Arriola, and Atty.  Mavic Cardona, are members of the ALS Faculty.
  • Atty. Jose Vicente Martin Salazar was IBP President.
  • Atty. Maria Victoria ‘Mavic” V. Cardona is currently Commissioner of Commission on Human Rights.

Each of the batch attendees were actually interviewed on-cam and shared their insights, and which would be part of a video documentary that would be put together by the end of the year. They also each signed messages onto the tarpaulin memorabilia for the 75th Anniversary official logo.

For all the other members of ALS Class 1998, much of the documented highlights would find itself into the cintra board that shall be prepared for your batch and unveiled on 06 June 2011. Be part of the celebrations; contribute old pictures; write a simple essay on anything that inspires you as an Ateneo Law graduate. And do join us on 06 June 2011 at the Rockwell campus, when we celebrate the Blue Mass, launch the commemorative book, and unveil your batch’s cintra board.

And we wish each of you—members of ALS Class 1998, the blessings of the Holy Spirit in your lives and careers.  ….. Dean Cesar Villanueva, LL.B. ‘81
