Invitation to Metrobank Foundation Professorial Chair for Public Service and Governance Lecture

21 January 2015

Dear friends and partners,

Greetings of peace!

We invite you to the Metrobank Foundation Professorial Chair for Public Service and Governance Lecture of Hon. Corazon “Dinky” Juliano-Soliman, Secretary of the Department of Social Welfare and Development to be held on February 17, 2015, 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. at Escaler Hall, Science Education Complex of the Ateneo de Manila University Loyola Heights Campus.

The said Professorial Chair is awarded every year to public servants who have demonstrated ethical, effective and empowering public leadership. Sec. Soliman is known for such brand of leadership for 30 years that she is in both non-profit and government focusing on social development and the fight for the rights of the disadvantaged.

Entitled "Will the poor be always with us?," Secretary Soliman's Professorial Lecture will focus on the government’s fight against poverty: how are we doing, what are the achievements, gains, challenges and gaps focusing on the programs implemented by DSWD like the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps).

Some of the other specific questions that the lecture will answer are the following:

· What are the efforts at the moment to ensure that poverty alleviation programs are sustained beyond 2016?
· How do we ensure that programs like 4Ps that provide direct assistance to the poor are truly empowering?
· How do we avoid turning these programs into mechanisms for patronage?
· Do these programs include citizenship education and community organizing?
