The
study program leading to the degree Master of Arts in Journalism is designed
primarily for working journalists who seek excellence and advancement in
their craft through a comprehensive academic graduate-level training. The
Konrad Adenauer Center for Journalism at the Ateneo is offering the program
jointly with the Department of Communication of the Ateneo de Manila University.
The coursework requires 36 units, or 12 subjects, covering basic and advanced
skills in print and online journalism, foundational courses such as media
ethics and media law, specialized reporting courses and courses from other
disciplines.
The courses are distributed as follows: core courses (9 units), electives
(15 units), and cognate courses (9 units). A culminating work, the Master's
project (3 units), qualifies the student for the degree.
The core courses are: Advanced Reporting and Writing, Media Ethics, and
Contemporary Issues in Media Law. They cover the fundamental competencies
and the ethical foundations that are the hallmark of a good journalist.
The elective courses fall under the following areas:
- writing and reporting skills
- specialized reporting
- management
- new media, and
- topical issues.
Cognate courses are taken in a discipline of the student's choice and hence
allow the student to acquire expertise in a field other than journalism.
Most of the courses are conducted using non-traditional teaching methods
to make for maximum flexibility of schedule and allow working journalists
to weave their classes around their daily routine. Thus, there are intensive
on-campus courses, online courses, and hybrid courses or combined online
and on-campus courses.
The program may be completed at an accelerated pace of one-and-a-half years,
or a regular pace of three semesters and a summer semester. After finishing
the coursework, the student completes a Master's project, an article of
5,000 to 7,000 words in length. As capstone, the project allows the student
to pursue a story, conduct in-depth reportage, and put to use enterprise
reporting skills.
Completion of the MA Journalism program certifies that a graduate has
- mastered the basic skills and acquired advanced skills underlying the competent practice of journalism;
- obtained a comprehensive understanding of the principles, laws, ethics, and theories of journalism;
- acquired subject matter expertise in a discipline such as political science and economics;
- demonstrated in a final project a sensibility and ability for responsible journalistic practice, critical thinking, and comprehensive understanding of issues.
