GK 1MB

In the aftermath of EDSA People Power, things haven't changed much. A lot of people are saying it just got worse. Many administrations have come and gone since Cory, yet there is still widespread crime and poverty in our country. Veterans of the EDSA People Power today are either rallying again or have thrown away their hope for the country entirely. But while everywhere else people were having demonstrations and rallies—many that turned a little violent and had to be dispersed by police—in QC Memorial Circle and several GK sites all over the country, another revolution was taking place. more

SAGIP

My mother use to say that a child could only be trained only up to a certain age and after that age it would be quite difficult to train the child already. As Gawad Kalinga is focusing on the youth as the would-be prime movers of change in this country it has not run short of youth programs. One such program is aptly named “SAGIP”. more

SIGA, The New Young Pinoy

Dr. Jose Rizal, our biggest role model for nationalism, believed the youth to be the hope of our fatherland.

Gawad Kalinga embodies this hope by giving the youth an opportunity to realize their full potential. Through Gawad Kalinga, Ateneo has been given the opportunity to touch the lives of many young and bright minds – the teens of Payatas 13 Blue Eagle Village. In the span of 2 years the school and its members have been witness to the amazing transformation of these children from lacking hope and being misguided to being the source of confidence and guidance for others. These youngsters are called Servants in God’s Army or SIGA. more

REFLECTION

I first heard about Gawad Kalinga through a friend of mine whose whole family was very active in the said organization. He told me that Gawad Kalinga’s aim was to bring everyone closer to God. I still didn’t know why he was so dedicated to the group since there are numerous other organizations which have the same aim. Why not choose to be active in your local parish church and try inspiring other people to do the same. That will also bring them closer to God, right? He then added that GK was different since they built houses for our less fortunate brothers and sisters. Sadly, I was not able to see the connection of what he said. I actually thought he was fooling around with me. GK wants to bring people closer to God and they build them homes? Maybe I was just a bit to naďve at that point, or maybe GK should be experienced first before it can be fully understood. more
