SAGIP

My mother use to say that a child could only be trained only up to a certain age and after that age it would be quite difficult to train the child already. As Gawad Kalinga is focusing on the youth as the would-be prime movers of change in this country it has not run short of youth programs. One such program is aptly named “SAGIP”.

SAGIP translated into English means, “to save”. Technically speaking it is program aimed at grade school children, roughly ages 7-13. True to the Gawad Kalinga vision of the youth as leaders, SAGIP offers creative workshops which serve to allow the child to pursue particular interests such as visual art, drama, dance and other such activities. Aside from this SAGIP also gives academic tutorials to fully harness the mental aptitude of the child. Finally to cap off all that SAGIP training is a strong values formation program; essentially a guide through which a child may put all of his or her training into the context of their lives. Having said all these things, the program is appropriately referred to as SAGIP, as these children are given an opportunity to relinquish the life of poverty they may have once known and reach for the dreams they have long held. In much wider setting, such as the Philippines, perhaps SAGIP as a name still holds true. This is as being able to “save” themselves, these children will also one day lead and save others.
