ATENEO FOOTBALL TEAM BORN 2008
BAGS THE 1st RUNNER UP TROPHY AND MEDALS
at the Fourth Ceres Cup Football Festival

TALISAY CITY, Philippines – With just one point deficit in the finals, the Ateneo de Manila University Football Team born 2008 from Manila showed grace, integrity and perseverance on and off the football field when they competed in the Under-9 division in the recently concluded Fourth Ceres Cup Football Festival in Bacolod City, Negros Occidental.

With 30 football teams nationwide vying for the top slots in the U9 age category, the Ateneo 08 Football Team emerged strong and successfully finished as 1st Runner Up for Ceres Cup 2017 in May 20 at Ceres FC North Football Field in Talisay City.  Amidst the scorching heat in the morning and afternoon and rain showers late afternoon till the Championship match, the Ateneo 08 Football Team kept their composure and focus and played the Ateneo way from start to finish.

The quarter final match held at Carlos Hilado Memorial State College or CHMSC Field, also in Talisay City, proved to be very challenging as they battled fiercely against players from Don Bosco Cebu.  The Ateneo 08 football players managed to persevere amidst all the jeering, pushing, shoving and elbowing from their opponents. The boys soldiered on as they endured low blows, standing up after every uncalled foul, brushing it off as if it was nothing. One could see that they clearly loved the game and the game had to be played fairly no matter what happens.

The hardworking Ateneo 08 Coach Paul Madrona steered the team towards the semifinal match as defenders Enzo Altuna, Andrew Landicho and Johnson Talosig guarded their 2-1 score until the end with Rafa Madrid playing as goal keeper.  Midfielder Andres Hizon fought with all his might alongside  Diego Angeles, as team striker Jay Jay Regino scored the 1st goal followed by an own goal from the opponent.  Lending able and strong support propelling the team to the semis and finals are team mates Iori Alminar, Manuel Agpalasin, Jr., Elmar Villarosa, Roman Tabayoyong and Yuan Llaneta.  After the referee blew the final whistle, all the boys went crying into their parents' arms.  It was not tears of joy for advancing to the semis, but because of frustration, exhaustion and the pressure to succeed.

"Our boys were frustrated because they didn't know why the game had to be messy and why the other kids had to hurt them in order to play. We tried to soothe them as much as we can and as quick as possible, because they still had to play in the semis and finals.  In the end, they found comfort in each other's company and after a few minutes, they were already smiling and laughing," said Mommy Nicole Madrid.

The Ateneo Born 2008 Football Team advanced to the semifinal match held at the Ceres FC North Football Field late in the afternoon.  With the rains pouring down,  the players worked hard on the field with Andres Hizon and Jay Jay Regino scoring a goal each at a final score of 2 – 1 in favour of Ateneo.

The Ateneo de Manila University Football Team born 2008 finished 1st Runner Up against a worthy opponent, the varsity team of Don Bosco Technical Institute, Victorias City, with a score of 1-0.

Team Coordinator Bessie Mati – Regino is thankful for the good exposure and opportunity for the players to experience playing football with young promising athletes from tournament delegates all over the Philippines.  “Our Ateneo 08 boys worked hard and prepared for all the football matches at the Ceres Cup.  It is evident that they poured their young heart and soul in every game they played.  We, parents are further inspired to support our young athletes as we watch them develop and advance in their football skills and grow simultaneously in character, team spirit, sportsmanship and camaraderie.”
