Representing the Philippines, Ateneo de Manila Grade School Mathletes Alphan Lomibao (6-Xavier) and Sieggy Cajucom (6-Bellarmine) won gold and bronze, respectively, in the 2020 International Mathematics Open for Young Achievers (IMOYA). The IMOYA was held virtually in Bangkok, Thailand on December 1 and 2, 2020.

Alphan and Sieggy’s awards were among the 29 gold, 103 silver, and 238 bronze awards harvested by the Philippines, which placed second overall among the 11 countries in the  annual contest. However, the Filipino math wizards outperformed their Southeast Asian rivals from Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and Singapore in garnering more gold awards than powerhouse China.

IMOYA aims to strengthen the mathematical intuition and computational skills of participants, and promotes cross-cultural interaction espousing camaraderie, understanding and respect for diversity. It also provides an in-depth mathematical experience for the enrichment of the students’ reasoning ability and creative thinking skills to solve challenging mathematics problems.
