Sylar Alcantara wins silver for PH in World Youth Fest

Representing the Philippines, Sylar Alcantara (3-Apo) bagged the silver medal in the United Through Sports (UTS) World Virtual Youth Festival 2020. Sylar was one of 16 athletes from all over the world in the under-10 boys division, and one of its youngest at 8 years old. Sponsored by the International Olympic Committee, the UTS World Virtual Youth Festival was hosted by Thailand from November 20 - 22, 2020, to coincide with United Nations World Children’s Day.  

According to web reports, more than 60 organizations- including the International Olympic Committee (IOC), IPC and Special Olympics- supported the event, which aimed to engage the youth in sports and make a unified call to action towards a more inclusive and better tomorrow.

The festival included virtual medal ceremonies, inspirational opening and closing ceremonies, and incorporated a vital platform of education by including an opening conference, panel discussions and workshops. Topics of focus included: Peace through sport, Inclusion and non-discrimination, Athletes’ roles and responsibilities, Safeguarding and child protection among others.
