Simbanggabi at the Church of the Gesù

The Simbanggabi, a university tradition during the Advent Season, was initiated by the Office of University Development and Alumni Relations in December 2000. In the first two years, the novena Masses were held at the Immaculate Conception Chapel of the Loyola Schools. In December 2002, the Simbanggabi celebrations moved to the newly constructed Church of the Gesù and have been held there since.

Since the first year of the Simbanggabi tradition in December 2000, the Masses have had an overflow crowd of members of the Ateneo community, the alumni and their families and friends. The sponsorship of Masses by alumni batches and student organizations is an opportunity to get together for mini reunions and to visit the Loyola campus. The Jesuit presiders’ homilies and the beautiful singing of the Ateneo choirs are considered to be main attractions of the Simbanggabi. Food concessionaires are invited to add to the fiesta atmosphere of this Filipino and Catholic tradition.

The Simbanggabi novena Masses are held annually from December 15 - 23 at 8:30 in the evening. The novena of Masses starts with the recitation of the Holy Rosary at 8:00 in the evening on December 15.

The numerous requests from the Ateneo community and the alumni gave way to the culmination of the Simbanggabi with a Christmas Eve Mass on December 24 at 10:00 in the evening.
