JSLC participants present project proposals

By John Xavier R. Valdes (N2008), JSLC Organizing Committee Networking Head

As the dew settled on the morning of April 5, 2008, the participants of the 1st ever Philippine Jesuit High School Student Leaders Convention (JSLC) arose for a third day of leadership, friendship and wondrous learning.

The day's work began as early as 8:15 am, when the various groups met to continue improving their project proposals. In the previous days, each group was tasked to formulate a plan to develop leadership among the youth in a specifically assigned region in the Philippines. The participants discussed, debated and deliberated as they enhanced the schemes they had started.

At 10:30 am however, the participants took five and gathered at the ITC for a talk on Leadership in the Community given by the ever-vibrant, witty and wise guest speaker, Mr. Francis Kong. During his talk, Mr. Kong, a renowned businessman, author and motivational speaker, gave the student-leaders insights on how to make positive differences in their respective schools and communities. “Good leaders do not create good followers,” he said. “They create more good leaders.”

After lunch, the groups met yet again to make the final additions to their project proposals which they would exhibit to a board of judges later that afternoon. As the clock struck 3:30, the participants scurried to the ITC to present and defend their proposals.

The three judges from the Ateneo de Manila High School  faculty, namely Mr. Ianne Hernandez of the Filipino subject area, Mrs. Estela Banasihan, and Ms. Sharon Agduma -both from the Social Studies subject area- mulled over each group’s presentation and gave tips and suggestions to further develop their advocacies.

In the end, the Western Visayas group (a.k.a. “Sound Mind and Body”) was deemed to have the best presentation and was declared the winner. They were each awarded a gift certificate for the following day's Day Trip (see related article about JSLC Day 4).

After mass and dinner that evening, the JSLC facilitators gave the participants a brief reflection/recollection of the tiring yet productive day that had just passed. For the night cap, all the student council chairpersons from each school met and evaluated the day’s events. They also took a vote as to whether there would be a 2nd JSLC.

As the third day of the 1st JSLC ended, the participants spent their last few hours as a complete group bonding and celebrating the past three days of enjoyment, friendship, and learning.
