The honorees are the Very Rev. Antonio M. Pernia, SVD, Bukas Palad Award in Memory of Fr. Manuel Peypoch, S.J.; Eugenia Duran-Apostol, Parangal Lingkod Sambayanan; Gilda Cordero-Fernando, Gawad Tanglaw ng Lahi; the Sumilao farmers with Atty. Arlene J. Bag-ao, Ozanam Award; and Dr. Fernando P. Hofileña, Lux-in-Domino Award.
The traditional university awards recognize entities or individuals who embody the highest ideals of the Ateneo -- servant-leadership, excellence, commitment and love of country. The citations for the honorees are as follows:
VERY REV. ANTONIO M. PERNIA, SVD
BUKAS PALAD AWARD in memory of FR. MANUEL PEYPOCH, S.J. in recognition of his leadership in preserving the charism and ministry of St. Arnold Janssen, founder of the Society of the Divine Word, in the changing times of the millennium. He is the first Asian Superior General of Societas Verbi Divini (SVD), one of the biggest international religious orders in the world. As one of the top religious superiors in Rome, he highlighted the Filipino presence in the global missionary work.
MS. EUGENIA DURAN-APOSTOL
PARANGAL LINGKOD SAMBAYANAN in recognition of her efforts from People Power revolution to “Education Revolution.” Through her Mr. & Ms. Magazine, she bravely gave an alternative press in the troubled times of the dictatorship. Consequently, she reclaimed for us our press freedom. She embarks on projects that educate masses and encourage the private sector to raise achievement scores of public school children and improve skills of teachers.
MS. GILDA CORDERO-FERNANDO
GAWAD TANGLAW NG LAHI in recognition of her various achievements in the fields of creative writing (fiction, essay, journalism), publishing, cultural research, theatre arts, painting and art and cultural patronage. Her unique “take” on Filipino identity and Philippine socio-cultural phenomena is optimistic and humorous.

SUMILAO FARMERS with ATTY. ARLENE J. BAG-AO
OZANAM AWARD in recognition of their peaceful ways of reclaiming their ancestral lands in Sumilao, Bukidnon. The hunger strike and cross-country walk inspired fellow farmers. It also raised awareness and support from students, churches and the nation on the role of agricultural development in national development.
DR. FERNANDO P. HOFILEÑA
LUX-IN-DOMINO AWARD in recognition of his humble and dedicated service to the Ateneo community for over five decades now. He served as mentor, adviser, colleague and supporter of the Ateneo College Glee Club. As prime mover of the Ateneo War Memorial initiated by the late President Fr. Pacifico A. Ortiz, S.J., he faithfully brought recognition of the heroism of many alumni. His medical practice at the Cupertino Center for Special Children and his selfless service to the parish exemplify his love of God. His service inspires us all.
