Atenean bags bronze at International Math Olympiad




Diogo de AlmeidaAteneo student Diogo Miguel S. Moitinho de Almeida bagged the bronze medal at the 49th International Math Olympiad (IMO) held on July 10-22, 2008 in Madrid, Spain. De Almeida graduated from the Ateneo High School in March 2008 as a recipient of the Mercury Drug Award for Mathematics.

Dr. Ian June L. Garces of Ateneo and Dr. Julius M. Basilla served as team leader and deputy team leaders, respectively, of the IMO team.

IMO is the most prestigious and the most difficult mathematics competition among the best secondary students in the world. Winners must be at the top 50 percent among all the contestants, and the numbers of bronze, silver, and gold medallists must be in the ratio 3:2:1

De Almeida was also conferred the Youth Excellence in Science (YES) medal by Department of Science and Technology Secretary Dr. Estrella F. Alabastro. YES medals recognize students who gain honor for the Philippines through winning in international competitions.

For 2008, 535 contestants from 102 countries and territories joined the competition.
