Spotlight on social entrepreneurship

The Ateneo de Manila University Development Studies Program and the Philippine Social Enterprise Network will host a Conference on Social Entrepreneurship from September 17 - 18, 2009 at the Ateneo Loyola Heights campus.

Dubbed, “Negosyo para sa iba, Negosyong kakaiba, Negosyo ka nga ba?” the conference will examine the different dimensions of social entrepreneurship and its impact on poverty. It will also showcase different successful models of social enterprises and introduce the Social Entrepreneurship Quality Index (SEQI), a useful benchmark for social enterprises.

The Conference on Social Entrepreneurship seeks to gather around 200 representatives from civil society, business and academe. Among the speakers who will shed light on the different dimensions of social entrepreneurship are Antonio La Viña, country representative of ASHOKA Philippines and dean of the Ateneo School of Government; Rene Guarin, president of the Philippine Social Enterprise Network; and Illac Diaz, executive director of My Shelter Foundation.

The impact of social entrepreneurship on poverty will be examined through the discussions of Reese Fernandez, president of Rags2Riches; Richard Rejas, executive director of Katilingbanong Pamahandi sa Mindanaw Foundation, Inc.; and Francisco Lara, Jr., PhD candidate at the London School Economics.

A number of successful social enterprise models will also have their share of the limelight. The presenters are Jovelyn Cleofe, executive director of the Center for Empowerment and Resource Development; Auke Idzenga, head for Appropriate Technology of the Alternative Indigenous Development Foundation, Inc.; Rene Guarin, executive director of the Upland Marketing Foundation, Inc.; Salvador Umengan, executive director of the Corn Board; Jeannie Javelosa, director of the ECHOstore; and Paolo Benigno Aquino, president of Microventures, Inc.

Last but not least, Manolita Gonzales will present the Social Entrepreneurship Quality Index (SEQI).  The SEQI provides a framework for appropriate social enterprise practice and is an initial attempt by the Philippine Social Enterprise Network (PhilSEN) to set a common standard for its members.
