Message of the JGSOM Dean

Dr. Luis F. Dumlao, Dean of the John Gokongwei School of Management

On behalf of the John Gokongwei School of Management (JGSOM), I welcome you to our School’s virtual site.

The JGSOM is in the business of developing people who see themselves looking for gaps in the marketplace. It is in the business of teaching those who envision themselves mobilizing resources, taking calculated risks and developing new products and services. It is in the business of research that answer questions like why companies do the things they do. But the JGSOM is not just about business per se. In line with the Jesuit tradition, we aspire to produce entrepreneurs and business leaders for others.

The mission of JGSOM is to shape our students into business leaders who can respond to the needs of tomorrow’s world. We make it our mission to make students be:

1. Global in perspective, interdisciplinary in approach, and technically proficient;
2. Guided by a strong set of core values, able to provide ethical and principle-centered leadership; and
3. Motivated by the spirit of magis and inflamed by the passion to make a difference.

With our mission, the JGSOM offers seven major degree programs. These are (1) the BS Management Program, (2) the BS Management Honors Program, (3) BS Management Engineering Program or ME, (4) the BS Management Major in Communications Technology Program or Comtech, (5) the BS Management Major in Applied Chemistry Program, (6) the BS Management Major in Legal Management Program or LM, and (7) BS Management Major in Information Technology Entrepreneurship Program. The collective seven programs comprise the first Center for Higher Education (CHED) Center of Excellence (COE) status in business education in the Philippines.

Apart from the major degree programs, the JGSOM offers minor degree programs that allow students to specialize in functional areas and skills sets in business. The minor degree programs include (1) Decision Science, (2) Enterprise Development, (3) Financial Management, (4) Information Technology, (5) International Business, (6) Marketing, (7) Project Management, (8) Strategic Human Resource Management and (9) Sustainability.

In the JGSOM, students are educated beyond the confines of the physical classroom. Through the JGSOM Student Enterprise Center (JSEC), students experience outside the classroom hands on entrepreneurial experience. In the JSEC facility and in its satellite sites within campus, students operate and run food stalls all year round giving them firsthand experience in running their own business.

Through the SOM Business Accelerator program (SOMBA), students go through a course-based enterprise development experience. In the summer of their last year in college, students organize in teams and finalize their product or service idea. In the first regular semester, each team develops its product, tests it on the market and actually registers their business in government. Finally in the second semester, each actually sells to the market and establish business concerns as continuing enterprises beyond graduation.

Not only can students study beyond the confines of the university, they can even study outside of the Philippines. The Ateneo de Manila University boasts of having the Philippines’ largest student mobility program with 80 plus foreign universities. Within the University, the JGSOM through the Junior Term Abroad program (JTA) sends the most number of students averaging about 150 per year. In recent past, students have spent a semester either in Oceania including Australia, in Europe including in France or Germany, in Asia including in China or Japan, and in North America including in the US.

How good has JGSOM been? In 2016 alone, the JGSOM is home of the champion of the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Institute Research Challenge in the Philippines and in the Asia-Pacific Regional Finals, champion of the 2016 L’Oreal Brandstorm Competition, champion of the Global Social Entrepreneurship Awards (GSEA) regionals, and champion of HSBC Case Competition among other rewards. As much as the JGSOM wants to benchmark itself with others, we aspire to be the country’s benchmark in business education.

Once again, welcome to the JGSOM’s virtual site. I hope you find this site helpful and informative as I invite you to join the John Gokongwei School of Management.
