Students from the Ateneo de Manila University won the 11th Local Finals of the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Institute Research Challenge held last February 21, 2019 at the Philippine Stock Exchange Auditorium in Ortigas, Pasig.

Ateneo’s Research Challenge team, called Venus Investment Research, is composed of Management Engineering seniors Katreena Dachelle Chang (Team Captain), Carina Monica Chua, Vince Benedict Say, Gabrielle Marie Tayag, and Christine Abigail Yu. They were coached by faculty adviser Alfonso Miguel Sevidal (BS ME ’17) from the Finance and Accounting Department and industry mentor Mark Alan Canizares (BS LM ’99) from Manulife.
The CFA Institute Research Challenge (IRC) is a global investment research competition that provides students with hands-on mentoring and intensive training in financial analysis. For this year’s local IRC, participants were asked to write an initiation report for the stock of D&L Industries, Inc. (DNL). The top four teams with the highest grades for the written report advanced to the local finals, where they gave a ten-minute presentation to a panel of judges, followed by a ten-minute question-and-answer portion.

Venus Investment Research bested teams from the University of the Philippines-Diliman, University of Santo Tomas, and University of the Philippines-Cebu.

They took home a cash prize of Php 100,000 and will be representing the Ateneo and CFA Society Philippines in the Asia Pacific Regionals on March 28-29 in Sydney, Australia. Should they win the regional round, they will compete in the Global Finals on April 25.

The team’s victory last February 21 marks the Ateneo’s fifth consecutive victory in the CFA IRC local finals and sixth national title overall. The Ateneo was also crowned Asia Pacific Regional Champions in 2015 and 2016.
The 11th Local Finals for the CFA Institute Research Challenge was made possible through the competition’s sponsors: National Home Mortgage Finance Corporation, COL Financial, FTI Consulting, and Infinit-O.
