Ateneo students win 9th CFA Institute Research Challenge Local Finals
Students from the Ateneo de Manila University won the 9th Local Finals of the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Institute Research Challenge held last February 16 at the PSE Auditorium in Ortigas, Pasig.
Ateneo’s IRC team, called Triton Investments, is composed of management engineering seniors Renz Carlo Chong, Javier Ricardo Consunji, Manuel Paolo Parungo, Alfonso Miguel Sevidal, and Maria Claudia Yupangco. They were coached by faculty mentor Riche Levin Lim (BS ME ’13) from the Finance and Accounting Department and industry mentor Mark Alan Canizares (BS LM ’99) of Manulife.
For this year’s local IRC, participants were asked to write an initiation report for the stock of Century Pacific Food, Inc. (CNPF:PM). The top four teams with the highest grades for the written report advanced to the local finals, where they gave a ten-minute presentation to a panel of judges, followed by a ten-minute question-and-answer portion.
The judges included BPI Securities Corporation Chief Executive Office Mike Oyson, BDO Trust Chief Investment Officer Frederico Ocampo, Philippine Equity Partners Research Analyst Philip Felix, COL Financial Research Analyst Charles Ang, and Corston Smith Analyst Kerry Lim-Bate.
Triton Investments bested teams from the University of the Philippines Diliman, the University of Santo Tomas, and De La Salle University-Dasmariñas.
They took home a cash prize of Php 100,000 and will be representing the Ateneo and CFA Society Philippines in the Asia-Pacific Regionals on March 15-16 in Bangkok, Thailand. Should they win the regional round, they will compete in the Global Finals in Prague, Czech Republic from April 27-28.
The team’s victory last February 16 marks the third consecutive time the Ateneo has won the local IRC finals and Ateneo’s fourth IRC title overall. The Ateneo was also crowned Asia-Pacific Regional Champions twice in a row in 2015 and 2016.
Team Triton Investments, now Team Ateneo and Team Philippines, aims to deliver Ateneo’s third regional title, Ateneo’s first global title, and the Philippines’ third global title as it competes in the regional finals.
The 9th Local Finals for the CFA Institute Research Challenge was made possible through the competition’s sponsors: COL Financial, Angping and Associates Securities, and Philippine Equity Partners.
