Master of Arts Major in Philosophy

 

The Master of Arts programs are designed to equip the students with concepts and skills to pursue doctoral studies and to handle with competence the philosophy courses at the undergraduate level.

There are two options in the Master of Arts major in Philosophy program: a thesis option and a non-thesis option—which is a terminal degree. 

 

Curriculum (Option I – Thesis)

 

UNDERGRADUATE PRE-REQUISITE COURSES - 6 units

                          PH 131        Theory of Knowledge          3 units

                          PH 132        Metaphysics                          3 units

 

REQUIRED COURSES - 9 units

                          PH 200      Methods of Research                              3 units

                          PH 201     Advanced Reflexive Metaphysics          3 units

                          PH 202     Theory of Knowledge                               3 units

 

FIELD OF CONCENTRATION COURSES - 15 units         

Any five courses from the List of Course Offerings with the approval of the Academic Adviser.

 

ELECTIVES - 6 units          

Any two courses from any field with the approval of the Academic Adviser.

 

COMPREHENSIVE EXAMINATIONS

THESIS WRITING OR FOUR PAPERS AND ORAL DEFENSE - 6 units*

                          PH 200.1    Thesis Writing      0 unit

* The units for the thesis are credited after the student passes the oral defense and submits the final revised copy of the thesis.
