LSAA honors Ateneans' artistic excellence

May 09, 2019

Thirty-four senior students of the Loyola Schools were feted at Dalisayan, the 26th Loyola Schools Awards for the Arts (LSAA).

Held May 8 at Escaler Hall, the LSAA is given to students who have demonstrated immense creativity in the fields of creative writing, theater, music, visual arts, graphic design and film.

Awardees for Music and Dance perform the opening act.
“Society has become increasingly opaque. There is, perhaps a greater need for art. I congratulate all 34 awardees this afternoon and felicitate with their parents, friends and mentors who nurtured and support in their journey,” said Dr. Jonathan O.  Chua, Dean of the School of Humanities (SOH).

Another award was also given out during the ceremony, this time to Fr. Rene B. Javellana, SJ.

For his “lifetime pursuit of scholarship in the arts and humanities which illumines which is Filipino, for his promotion of art education in the Philippines through his publications and administrative work, and his attitude of curiosity that invites ever further and broader inquiry,” SOH awarded Fr. Javellana with an Outstanding Achievement in the Humanities.

In his acceptance speech, Fr. Javellana encouraged the student awardees in the audience to always have a desire for knowledge and the truth.

“Be curious; love learning for its own sake. Read a lot or the old fashioned analog way of the printed book— I still get intoxicated with the smell of paper and fresh ink. Be truth seekers because you are already beauty seekers.”
