April 27, 2017
The Department of Environmental Science, represented by Dr. Aileen Guzman, who serves as project head for the Ateneo Team is part of the pilot study being conducted by the Asian Development Bank to potentially market sludge as a soil conditioner. Ateneo’s participation focuses on the characterization of sludge from 2 municipal sources, ecotoxicological assessment of sludge and treated wastewater, characterization of biosolids and assessment of the effectiveness of various types of biosolids.
In line with the participation of the Department, Dr. Guzman, together with some of the Department’s graduate students in MS ES participated in two conferences, the inception meeting which was held last October 2016 at ADB Headquarters. During the inception meeting, a summary of the pilot activity was presented to the Technical Working Pannel (TWP) on Sanitation. The Panel is composed of representatives from various government agencies and private institutions.
Last February 2017, the Ateneo team presented the results of the sludge characterization as well as results of the ecotoxicological assessment of both sludge and treated wastewater. The mid-term conference was held in Baguio City and was attended by members of the TWP.
Aside from participating in conferences, the team also conducted a workshop for the Baliwag Water District last March 20, 2017. The workshop which was held in Ateneo de Manila University focused on teaching staff how to process sludge and effluent for helminths analysis. Staff were also given the opportunity to identify various helminth species using a microscope.
Aside from Dr. Guzman, the Ateneo team includes Dr. Emilyn Q. Espiritu, Mrs. Racquel Jewel S. Unson, MSc, Jay Roy Espinas, May Ann Udtojan, Marylle del Castillo, Vince Jethro Alba, Maria Larisse Hernandez, Lara Sy and Joan Dumo.
