The Asian Center for Journalism invites everyone to a forum called “Fake News and Fact-checkers,” with Prof. Kim Kierans of the University of King’s College in Canada, and Avigail Olarte of VERA Files. The forum will be held on Thursday, Oct. 26, at the Faura Hall Audio Visual Room from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m.

With our social media feeds becoming a platform for all sorts of news, real and fake, the question “What is the truth?” has become an urgent topic and a question the public has to constantly ask itself. This forum features veteran journalist and academic Kim Kierans who will share stories of disinformation and misinformation in Canada, and what journalists there are doing about it.

Here in the Philippines, the online news site VERA Files has been taking steps to fight disinformation through its Fact-check project to be discussed by Avigail Olarte.

Aside from being vice president of the University of King’s College in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, and former director of its journalism school, Prof. Kierans also teaches in the Master of Arts programs of both King’s College and the Ateneo de Manila University. Ms Olarte is an alumna of the Ateneo’s M.A. Journalism program.
