Some Notes on the Sociology of Costume

This essay suggests that a "double discourse" operates in trying to understand the sociology of costume, or the dressed body on stage. One is the discourse of the stage production, including the performance text; the other is the discourse of the larger society that receives theatrical performance. How these two discourses interact point to ways that stage ,society, and agency reproduce themselves or become venues for transformation. This presentation was made at the 6th Asian Shakespeare Forum, National Taiwan University, June 6-7 2012.
