425 employees honored for their service and dedication
At 89 years old, Ateneo de Manila High School teacher Onofre Pagsanghan, or Mr. Pagsi as he is fondly called by his students, led the 425 honorees at the 39th University Service Awards. Held on February 17, 2017 at the Ateneo de Manila High School covered courts, the annual service awards recognize all university employees who have achieved service milestones.
Ernesto Tanmantiong, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, gave the welcome address. “You exemplify what it truly means to be men and women for others. Thank you for believing in our mission and investing a generous portion of your lives to pursue it.”
Five year awardees received service pins— a half-inch replica of the Ateneo official seal while 10, 15, and 20 year awardees were given service plaques. Twenty-five year awardees received services plaques and monetary awards. Awardees of 30 years and above were presented with service certificates and monetary awards.
Twenty-five year awardee Dr. John Paul Vergara (Department of Information Systems and Computer Science) thanked the university on behalf of the awardees.
“Thank you Ateneo for making this institution a place where we fit happily in a caring community; where our talents and our weirdness are put to a good use; and we are able to connect learn, defer, and grow all towards this wonderful mission of teaching and forming persons for others.”
Ateneo de Manila University president Fr. Jose Ramon T. Villarin, S.J. delivered the closing remarks, emphasizing the privilege of raising a child.
“If ‘it takes a village to raise a child,’ as the African proverb says, then we of the Ateneo de Manila are privileged to be one of the households in that village. Everyone here in this community contributes to the raising of a child, who may not be our biological own, but who belongs to a greater village and who, like every one of us, is God’s very one,” he said. “There lies the joy no one can ever steal from us: our joy in the children entrusted to our care, the children who we know- these Ateneans who will never forget the village, and who in turn shall raise the village who raised them.”
A presidential Luncheon for special awardees (those who have rendered 25 years of service and above) will be held at the Singson Hall in Ateneo de Manila Grade School on February 17, 2017.
