University researchers and artists feted for their scholarly work
More than 200 Ateneo de Manila University faculty members, research assistants, staff, and students were honored at the annual University Scholarly Work Awards held on 7 December.
The University Scholarly Publication Awards are bestowed to researchers from the Loyola Schools and the Ateneo Professional Schools in recognition of their influential and scholarly works for the academic year 2019-2020. Only peer-reviewed research is eligible for the publication awards. During the virtual ceremony, Dr Ma. Louise Antonette delas Peñas, Associate Dean for Research and Creative Work, Loyola Schools, also presented for the first time the Award for Foreign co-authorship (Scopus-indexed scholarly work with at least one co-author from an overseas university) and the Creative Work Awards (representing performing arts, screen arts, and visual arts).

University President Fr Roberto C Yap SJ, said that the University’s dedicated pursuit of research “exemplify everything that we value as a Filipino, Jesuit, and Catholic university—a testament to both the excellence and compassion of our faculty.”
The addition of the Creative Work Awards, he said, upholds the fundamental role of arts in society.
He also expressed optimism over the University’s research growth.

“Despite the limitations imposed by the pandemic, I know that extensive research was done this year. Much of the research for this year focused on the pandemic itself and its effects on various communities, its impact and significance. It is my hope that Ateneo will continue to have a culture of research of service, nation building, and human development in the foreseeable future.”
From 2018-2019, the University’s research outputs (indexed in the Scopus Database) saw an increase by 39%, heralding Ateneo’s desire to continue pushing the boundaries for new knowledge. This was also shared by the University’s immediate past president, Fr Jose Ramon T Villarin SJ.
“Research is integral to intellectual labor and we all know that new knowledge leads to contemplative wonder, contemplative gratitude, and resolute action, too.”

With the myriad of global issues—COVID-19, climate change, human rights, and social inequality, to name a few, knowledge sharing is essential in addressing these challenges. Early this year, Ateneo launched archium.ateneo (https://archium.ateneo.edu/), an institutional repository of the University’s scholarly works intended not just for management, dissemination and preservation of scholarly works but opportunities for institutional synergies and collaborations.
