Star Athletes hold Shakey’s V-league Volleyball Camp
Last March 23, as early as 7 am, aspiring young athletes were lined up in front of the Blue Eagle Gym at the Ateneo de Manila University to participate in the first ever Shakey’s V-league Volleyball camp. The camp was open to girls 6 to 18 years old on a first-come, first-served basis.
Trainers were the star athletes of Shakey’s V-league Angela Benting, Fille Cainglet, Jheck Dionela, Jem Ferrer, Sue Roces, Pau Soriano, and Alyssa Valdez. Ateneo Women’s Volleyball team head coach Roger Gorayeb was the camp director. They shared their knowledge and experience about in the two session clinic and covered the basic skills training such as digging, setting, spiking and serving. They also introduced proper body form and arm and hand movement.
Director of Ateneo’s University Athletics Office Ricky Palou explained that the summer camp was part of Shakey’s advocacy to continue the development of the sport. It is also a way of giving back to the fans and to inspire young girls to do sports.
Ateneo’s Fille Cainglet and Jem Ferrer shared that sports teaches things other than just being physically fit. “The value that you can get from learning sports is teamwork” said Cainglet. “ Kahit kids pa lang sila, kailangan nilang matuto makisama at makisalimuha sa kapwa nila.”
“It’s discipline” said Ferrer. “Being a student athlete is not easy because you have to balance your studies and your sport. It’s a matter of time management.”
The two session volleyball camp, however did not expect over 500 participants to come. Palou, announced that those who weren’t able to participate will be given free admission on the opening of the 10th season of Shakey’s V-league.
