Pavia

Sta. Monica Parish

Pavia became an independent parish in 1862. Fr. Policarpio Minayo built a wood and brick church between 1864-73; Fr. Antonio Fermentino, parish priest from 1882-87 and 1988-90 rebuilt the church in brick; Fr. Lázaro Ramírez completed the work between 1895-99. Fr. Calixto Fernandez built a stone convento in 1887. The church was used as a garrison by the Japanese during World War II and raided by Filipino guerillas several times. The church walls were damaged in the process. A bomb damaged the church near the apse. The convento destroyed during the war was never restored; the church, however, was. Repair work is quite obvious in the façade, near the apse, and at topmost courses of the nave.

Heritage Features: The brick and coral stone church is inspired by Romanesque designs, evident in the use of the Roman arch, the solidity of design and the repetitive placement of arch windows and portals. The façade has a portico of three arches, decorated with a pair of Greek crosses. The flanks are pierced by pairs of arched windows on the lower floor and a rose windows on the second floor. The rounded apse completes the Romanesque design of the church
