Five years after La Trobe University and the Ateneo
de Manila University formalized their partnership in education
and research, the Philippines-Australia Studies Centre
(PASC) and the Philippines-Australia Studies Network (PASN)
hosted a celebration of their cooperation last 17 June
2005 highlighted by the ceremonial marking of the PASC-PASN
book collection at the Pardo de Tavera Hall of the Rizal
Library, Ateneo de Manila Loyola Heights Campus. Dr. Filomeno
V. Aguilar Jr., PASN director, and Dr. Charles Mott, PASC
deputy director, welcomed the distinguished guests and
representatives of the two universities, including Australian
Ambassador Tony Hely, Fr. Bienvenido F. Nebres, S.J.,
Ateneo president, Dr. Anna Miren Gonzalez-Intal, Ateneo
Vice-President for the Loyola Schools, and Dr. Antonette
Palma-Angeles, Ateneo Academic Vice President. The program
started with Fr. Nebres signing a renewal five-year Memorandum
of Understanding. Dr. Michael Osborne, vice-chancellor
and president of La Trobe, already had a signing in Australia.
Dr. Trevor Hogan, PASC director, was instrumental in
putting together the collection, which consists of more
than 800 books on the social sciences and public health,
solicited from various professors and the library at La
Trobe University. He turned over the books carrying PASC-PASN
bookplates to Ms. Lourdes T. David, director of the Ateneo
Rizal Library.
Also present were Australians who participated in the
two-day Budhi-Thesis Eleven colloquium at the Ateneo,
namely, Dr. Trevor Hogan, Dr. Peter Beilharz, Dr. Peter
Murphy, Ms. Miriam Riley, Mr. Darrell Bennets, and Mr.
Clinton Walker. Dr. Stephen Turner, a graduate research
professor at the University of South Florida, also attended
upon the invitation of Dr. Hogan.
Part of the celebration was the launch of the first PASN
publication titled Australian
Perspectives on the United States, Southeast Asia, and
the World: The PASN Inaugural Week Lectures. This
is a collection of the lectures of visiting Australian
academics held during the week of the PASN launch in February
2004. Complimentary copies were given out to Fr. Nebres,
Amb. Hely, Dr. Hogan, Dr. Murphy, Dr. Gonzalez-Intal,
and the Ateneo Rizal Library.
