Message of the Dean
This is an exciting time to be a student of the John Gokongwei School of Management. It is certainly an exciting time for me to serve it as Dean.
Our strategic partnership with the JG Summit group of companies has made more resources available to us than we have ever had before, and we intend to use these resources and to leverage on this partnership to catapult our school into the top tier of undergraduate business schools in the region.
Among our exciting new initiatives, all begun within the last two years, are:

our Junior Term Abroad program that gives our students the opportunity to spend a full semester abroad at partner institutions in Hungary, Austria, France, the United States, China, Hong Kong and Japan

the JG SOM Business Accelerator (SOMBA), where students participate in a year-long business venture laboratory that allows them to set up an actual business under the supervision of our faculty, earning decent bucks and full academic credits at the same time,
-
our China Business Study Tour, which will bring our students on a month-long trip to Hongkong, Beijing and its environs, for lectures, field trips, and a healthy dose of sightseeing,
-
the Business Leadership Forum, which brings together CEOs and COOs of leading Philippine corporations to share their best practices and success stories with other members of our business community, and
-
the Family Business Breakfast Roundtable, which provides a forum for entrepreneurs involved in family businesses to discuss their concerns and to learn from the experiences of others in professionalizing their operations
We are also very pleased to announce that we will be hosting, in February 2004, the 9th Session of the ASEF University, with its theme of "Asia-Europe Economic Partnership: Opportunities and Challenges for Enterprises in a Changing Global Environment". ASEF University is two-week enrichment program for 38 university students from all over Asia and Europe, and will bring in speakers from all over the world to speak on topics relevant to our theme. It will include a cultural program that will help the young delegates get to know more about the Philippines, and the Ateneo de Manila University.
We are very honored to have been selected to host this affair, which is held semi-annually at venues alternating between Asia and Europe. Only three other Asian universities have had the opportunity to host ASEF University in the past, and all three are ranked at the very highest tier of Asian educational institutions: Beijing University, the National University of Singapore, and Chulalongkorn University (Bangkok, Thailand). We are very pleased to now be counted among them.
Earlier this year, we celebrated the JGSOM Week, "Everything Good Under the SOM", a collaboration with 12 business organizations of the Ateneo (ACTM, AEA, AIESEC, AJMA, AMA, BOA, COSA, LEX, MACA, MEA, MECO, and MISA) that concluded with a riotous "Mr. and Ms. SOM" awards night.
The next few years will be a period of innovation and experimentation. It will especially a period of great opportunity, not just for our students, but for our entire school.

the new spirit and energy that is blowing in our school. Keep coming

taking place, and to hear about the many opportunities that are bound to
