JGSOM launches Family Business Breakfast Forum

Due to the success of the Third Business Leadership Forum, the Ateneo de Manila University's John Gokongwei School of Management launched the Family Breakfast Forum last 20 September 2003 at the Rockwell Club, Amorsolo Building, Makati.

The topic of the forum was "Conflict Resolution in the Family Business," an off-shoot of the Third Business Leadership Forum entitled "It Runs in the Blood: Unlocking the Secrets of Successful Family Businesses" which attracted more than 500 participants held in 1 August 2003 at the Intercontinental Hotel, Makati.

The forum, moderated by Fr. Nilo E. Tanelaga, S.J. of the John Paul II National Institute for Studies on Marriage and Family, covered important components in effective conflict resolution within the context of families in business. Fr. Tanelaga gave a conceptual framework of which certain conflicts experienced in the family business may be rooted in the differences and unresolved issues that may be found in the family's past and present relationship. After his speech, there was an open forum which focused on the orientation one needs as a family mediator and some skills and methodology in the handling of family disturbances in order to keep family businesses healthy.

Participants expressed their appreciation of the endeavor and at the same time, their recognition of the effects of family dynamics, the local culture, and various pressure points in family businesses.

The Department of Leadership and Strategy, headed by Mr. Carmelo Francisco, organized the event. A fee of Php 700.00 was charged from each of the fifty (50) participants. The forum started at 7:30 AM and promptly ended at 9:30 AM.
