JGSOM launches Student Business Review

The John Gokongwei School of Management launched its Ateneo Student Business Review (ASBR) in a ceremony held at the JGSOM Building last 24 March 2004.

The ASBR is the official student research journal of the Ateneo de Manila University's John Gokongwei School of Management. It is the most ambitious attempt to institutionalize undergraduate business research in JGSOM. The ASBR seeks to publish independent research and analysis of contemporary business issues, outstanding student papers from various JGSOOM sources, critical commentary and human-interest articles. It dares to contribute new thinking on critical issues relevant to both the local and global business environment. It hopes to develop business studenst who are critical not only with the world of business but also with the link of business functions and the sociopolitical sphere where it operates.

Wilfred Segovia, a senior Management Engineering major and editor of the ASBR, explained the concept behind the creation of the ASBR, "As management students, we have been trained in the core functions of business...yet there comes a point in every business student's life that classroom learning is not enough. Suddenly, there are questions that a business textbook cannot answer." He added that the ASBR began as an idea for a brainstorming contest in the Management Engineering Association, a student organization consisting of Management Engineering majors in 2003. One year later, it has grown to become the newest student organization complete with its team of writers, designers, and marketing people

The first issue of the ASBR included the following articles: Filipino Going Global, which addresses how Filipino firms can best enter and succeed in international markets; Intimate Intrusions, which discusses alternative forms of advertising that can more effectively reach more sophisticated consumers; A Broader Conception of Corporate Governance and Its Implications for Asia, which argues for a more critical and inclusive framework that puts stakeholder welfare at the center of firm behavior; and The Business of War: Private Military Companies and the Corporization of Security, which analyzes the nature of corporate model and its relation to an emerging international market for military security.

In addition, ASBR also featured oustanding student works such as E-Lustrado, an award-winning IT-based business plan, and The World Trade Organization and Its Impact on Philippine Development, which is a comprehensive introduction to the controversial multilateral economic institution and a survey of its effects on the Philippines. Lastly, it also profiled the personal side of one of the country's most influential leaders in the feature entitled John Gokongwei, Jr.'s Version of Retirement.
