JG SOM invites all to a workshop for founders and successors of family businesses

Working for the family business has its perks as well as its pitfalls. For one, although you have the safety, convenience, and protection of your relatives as you work in the company, it is difficult for one to mature professionally, especially for the younger ones, if their father also happens to be the boss. Hard work becomes secondary if children begin to rely on parents to clean up after mistakes. Resentment on both sides can set in if communication lines are not put in place. Although business is still business, nothing is stronger than a family bond. How then to manage all these different angles, when you run a family business?

The John Gokongwei School of Management presents Changing Hands, a two-day succession-planning workshop for founders of family businesses and, most importantly, their successors. This event, which is a unique two-part approach to dealing with family business issues, will deal with how to make the business grow and work for families who are interested.

Dr. Dennis Jaffe, renowned author, professor, family consultant and family therapist will spearhead this event by tackling the personal issues that must be resolved in order to remove the setbacks of growing a professional career with relatives. He has helped numerous families and family businesses for 35 years.

This two-day event is divided into two main focus groups; the first day is designed for founders and current heads of business, and the questions that are most relevant to them in terms of succession planning, questions such as, "how can I select my successor to be fair with all my children?" Expected reactor for the first day is Associated Professor, noted writer, educator and family business consultant, Dr. Queena Lee-Chua.

The second day will focus on the successors of the business, the young ones who have a lot less experience in family business matters. Dr. Jaffe will guide the young potential successors into a mindset of leadership that prepares itself for the onset of taking over. Expected reactors of the second day are Mr. Ricky Mercado, Professorial Lecturer at the Ateneo de Manila and family business consultant, and Josephine Gotianun-Yap, President of Filinvest Development Corp.

The participants of this event will be given the opportunity to share their experiences with other people in the workshop, to question and interact with each other, in order to make this a more hands-on approach. Each session is meant to stand alone, but participants are encouraged to participate in both events to get the full picture, so to speak. After all, there are two sides to succession, and understanding both of them will be equally beneficial to the process of handing over the family business.

The event will be held on the 17th and 18th of February 2006 at the John Gokongwei School of Management at the Ateneo de Manila University. Rate for attending one day is P3500 or P6000 for both days.  You can download the registration form here.  See this brochure for more information and for other inquiries, please call 849-6911.
