JGSOM students bag top prize at the Junior Chamber International Philippines Best Business Plan Competition!
Francis E. Layug (4 BS MGT)

Thomas Edison said that for any invention to create a lasting impact, it requires 90% perspiration and 10% inspiration. Actually, the same can be said for business ventures.

In today's highly competitive business arena, reaping profits entails a carefully crafted business plan and its masterful execution. Ignore these things, and expect your company to be added to the long list of corporate busts. Having these in mind then, the JCI or Junior Chamber International Philippines organized the Best Business Plan Competition with the mission to instill in today's youth the importance of a thoroughly researched business plan.

JCI Philippines conceived this project with the mission to foster and encourage students to awaken and develop their entrepreneurial spirits. JCI is now on its third year of sponsoring this very prestigious Business Plan Competition. Schools from all over the country were asked to submit potentially viable and feasible business ventures.

The screening process was no walk in the park. Several sleepless nights and mock presentations were undergone to ensure that only the best got to represent the Ateneo. Only 10 finalists chosen nationwide were picked to participate in the 3rd JCI Best Business Plan Competition and five of the teams came from the Ateneo School of Management. Two of those teams would eventually win the top prizes. MedCorp (Carragel) took home First Place while Greenfields Corporation bagged Most Socially Relevant Award and beat all other finalists to emerge as Overall Champion.

MedCorp (Carragel) was composed of all Senior Management students, namely: Mark King, Ma. Cecilia Mahilum, Chris David Palarca, Dhan Morris Samson, Simon Villapando and Faye Eloisa Zarate.

MedCorp's product Carragel is a hemostatic agent offered as an alternative for surgical procedures. It is a foam-like material made from carragenan (seaweeds) that has a faster absorption rate and hence can absorb blood faster during operations, compared to its competitors. It is more natural, and non-synthetic (having come from seaweeds) and comes out a cheaper substitute for surgeons and hospitals.

Greenfields Corporation's board of directors are also all senior management students and they include, Jose Rene Sarmiento (CEO), Anton Villanueva (COO), Jose Victor Reyes (Marketing Director), Joshua Zacarias de Jesus (Sales Director), Darwin Yao (R&D), Joanne Heather Tanedo (HR Director) and finally, Francis Layug (CFO).

Greenfields Corporation's product is called Bio-Control, which is a biological insecticide that has no harmful chemicals that can be detrimental to nature. Instead, the active ingredient is a fungal strain called Metarhizium Anisopliae.

Greenfields is to target offering their winning product to agricultural operators and farm owners in various regions in the country, most notably region 3 as this region is more open to farming alternatives.

Next up for both winning groups is to revise their winning business plans to compete in Seoul, Korea for the JCI World Conference. We wish both groups the best of luck and hope they have enough perspiration and inspiration to keep them going.
