Ateneo Tops Annual Statistics Meet

On September 15, 2001, the Ateneo once again proved its supremacy in statistics.  The Ateneo duplicated its winning feat last year by winning the top prize for the annual competition Stat-Is-Eeks.  Organized by the UP Statistical Society, the event's elimination round was held at the UP School of Statistics, immediately followed by the final round at the New Era College.  Under the guidance of Mr. Bernard Chan of the Math Department, Ateneo's Team A composed of Patrick Lim, Jamie Li Han, and Sam Lim, all ME juniors, won the top place, while under the guidance of Ms. Loreli Santos, also of the Math Department, Ateneo's Team B composed of Melvin Uy, Rhyan Uy, and Francisco Isidro got the 2nd place.  Third place was the team from UP Diliman.

The school's representatives for the annual meet were selected upon the recommendations of their statistics teachers.  The individual round also saw Ateneo's best with Kit Isidoro of team B winning the top place followed by Sam Lim of team A for the 2nd place.

Ateneo Places 3rd in ICFC

The Ateneo representatives under the guidance of Ms. Jennifer Lee, a faculty member of the Finance and Accounting Department, ranked 3rd place in the recently concluded 3rd Intercollegiate Finance Competition.  Held last September 26 to 28, 2001 at the Little Theater in Miriam College, the competition was aptly titled "In Search for the Best Finance Team for 2002" by its host organization, the Financial Executives Institute of the Philippines (Finex).

The members of the team were selectively picked by their respective finance and accounting teachers, namely, Dr. Venus Ibarra, Maurice Lim, Carlo Carrascoso and Darwin Yu.  The criteria for selection included final grades and performance in class.  The representatives were Jacob Cabochan (IV-BS BMH), Toni Ann Enteria (III-BS ME), Alexander Marquez (IV-LM), Jon Vincent Ong (III-BS ME), and Manuel Ricardo Sacramento (IV-LM).

Finance, Accounting and Economics were the three main subjects the competition tackled.  Ms. Lee comments that the main waterloo of the team, causing it to place behind the University of the Philippines (UP) and De La Salle University (DLSU), was the questions on tax.  Instead of bleakly dwelling on the matter, the department has taken a different route and sees instead room for improvement.  It has already made plans to rectify this by offering a tax accounting elective for finance minors hopefully in place next year.
