Department of Biology

BS Biology

The Biology Program is ever sensitive to the rapid developments in biological sciences and the competitiveness in medical education and research, yet it allows flexibility for students to develop their chosen fields of interest in the life sciences. The program prepares the students to pursue either medical studies, higher biology programs leading to a master and doctorate degrees, or other related disciplines. A key element of the program is close student interaction that enhances academic development.

MS Biology

The Master of Science in Biology is a research-oriented degree that aims to prepare students for teaching and research; and for work in industry and government agencies that require expertise in the field of biology.

Master in Biology

The Master in Biology program is especially designed to answer the professional needs of tertiary level biology teachers for upgrading, updating, and retooling. This is a non-thesis, straight course work program that allows a student to finish the degree within one year and two summers, or within four summers.

Master in Biology Education

The Master in Biology Education is designed for science teachers of elementary and secondary schools. This program aims to improve the teaching competencies and capabilities of those already engaged in teaching science and biology in elementary and secondary schools, or to be trainers in basic science education.

Department of Chemistry

BS Chemistry

This 4-year program recognizes the importance of chemistry in our economy and everyday lives. It trains students who wish to work as chemists in industry, enter the teaching profession, or pursue further studies. The emphasis is on the acquisition of thorough knowledge of the fundamental principles of chemistry and modern instrumentation. The program culminates in a thesis project. Graduates are eligible to take the Chemist Licensure Examinations.

BS Chemistry/BS Applied Computer Systems
   (5-year double degree program)

This is a 5-year dual major program in which the student graduates with two degrees: B.S. Chemistry (after 4 years) and B.S. in Applied Computer Systems after an additional year. A B.S. Chem./A.C.S. student is trained to be proficient in chemistry, instrumentation, and computer hardware and software. The program requires a chemistry thesis project and a computer engineering project. Graduates are also eligible to take the Chemist Licensure Examinations. This program was formerly known as B.S. Chemistry with B.S. Computer Engineering.

BS Chemistry/BS Materials Science and Engineering
   (5-year double degree program)

The B.S. Chemistry/B.S. M.S.E. program is a 5-year double-degree program where the students obtain a B.S. Chemistry after four years and a B.S. M.S.E. after the fifth year. The B.S. Chemistry program provides a strong foundation on the chemistry of materials with specialized electives on materials. The technologies of the 21st century shall demand new materials and devices with special properties. Materials Science and Engineering integrates the knowledge and tools of chemistry and physics with engineering principles to design, fabricate and characterize improved and novel materials such as polymers composites, biodegradable plastics and biocompatible materials; ceramics, metals, and many others. The program prepares the student for a career in the semiconductor, plastics, rubber, paints and resins, ceramics, textiles, food, or even the cosmetics industry.

BS Management of Applied Chemistry

The B.S. M.A.C. is a 4-year program offered jointly with the School of Management. This program aims to develop entrepreneurial managers with strong foundation in science and technology, particularly in chemistry-related ventures. This program features a summer industry internship and a product launch in the senior year.

Straight BS/MS Chemistry
   (5-year program)

The 5-year B.S./M.S. Chemistry program allows outstanding students in the BS Chemistry program to complete both a B.S. and an M.S. within 5 years. This program emphasizes independent research, especially in the fifth year. Students are initially enrolled in the B.S. Chemistry program. Outstanding students may opt to move into the B.S./M.S. Chemistry track starting their junior year.

MS Chemistry

The M.S. Chem. program requires the preparation of a thesis. The program seeks to impart to its students a high degree of competence in research and in the professional practice of Chemistry.

Master of Chemistry

The Master of Chemistry program is designed to address the need for chemists with advanced training in industry and in science education. The M. Chem. student takes a pre-set number of advanced chemistry courses and finishes a special project. No thesis is required under this program.

MS in Chemistry Education

The Ateneo has always had a special concern for the training and formation of educators. The M.S. Chem. Ed. program is designed to be content-oriented to meet the needs of Chemistry teachers in high schools and colleges throughout the country. Students may opt for either a thesis track for the research-inclined or a project track focused on practical applications.

PhD Chemistry

The Ph.D. Chem. program requires a thesis dissertation. The program seeks to impart to its students a high degree of competence in research and in the professional practice of Chemistry.

Department of Electronics, Computer and Communications Engineering

BS Electronics and Communications Engineering
 
 (5-year program)

This 5-year program aims to train licensed engineers who have a competent grasp of both the science and technology of modern electronics and telecommunications. It is expected that these professionals will not only be applications experts but also creative innovators in this field. The program is global in its outlook, with teaching and training extending beyond the classroom. The student curriculum incorporates exposure to industry as well on- the-job training that will enhance the students’ professional preparation. The industry commitment and linkage programs provide an excellent environment for research, innovation and technology development.

BS Computer Engineering
 
 (5-year program)

This 5-year engineering program prepares students to become quality engineers in information technology and computer applications. Graduates will have good communication and analytical skills gained from mathematics, science, engineering, and elective courses offered by the department. The department puts special emphasis in the field of microelectronics and its application in the rapidly evolving field of digital systems. The hands-on and integrative approach to development train students to become leaders in enterprises dealing with digital technologies.

BS Applied Computers Systems
 
 (1-year program) (Combination with BS Chemistry or BS Physics)

This is the second degree of a 5-year dual major program. The first degree may either be BS Physics Chemistry. Graduates of this one-year program possess skills in the scientific applications in instrumentation and control. Subjects are taken in both computer hardware and software. This courses requires a practical project, thus providing the students with hands-on experience and exposure to industry applications.

Department of Environmental Science

BS Environmental Science

BS Environmental Science (BS ES) program aims technically competent, socially responsible and culturally rooted environmental practitioners who will lead in industry, government and civil society. The BS ES curriculum combines the empirical focus of the natural sciences with the pro-active methodologies of management and the social sciences. It provides a broad disciplinary foundation needed to address many of today’s complex environmental problems.

Master in Environmental Management

The Master in Environmental Management (MEM) programs aims to respond to the needs of environmental management professionals from the government, business and industry, non-governmental organizations, consultancy firms, and academe. It is a professional non-thesis master’s program that provides the student with the essential background in Environmental Science and Engineering, Environmental Economics, Ethics, Environmental Policy and Law, as well as the principles and practices in Environmental Management. Its is offered in collaboration with the University of San Francisco, the Ateneo School of Government, and the Philippines Business for the Environment.

Health Sciences Program

BS Health Sciences

The BS Health Sciences (BS Hsc) Program is designed for future health professionals and physicians who aspire to continue their training at the Ateneo School of Medicine and Public Health. It provides the multi-disciplinary perspective on health and its relationship to society so that the graduate will be better prepared for managing the complex challenges in health care delivery. The program draws strength from its faculty who come from the Loyola Schools; Health Unit of the Ateneo School of Business; The Leaders for Health Project of the DOH, Pfizer and the AGSB; and The Medical City.

Department of Information Systems and Computer Science

BS Computer Science

The BS Computer Science program provides a rigorous foundation in both theoretical and practical aspects of computing. Core CS courses provide the students with an intensive background in the development of algorithms, software and in the design and interconnection of computers. Electives are available in the various areas in computer science such as: artificial intelligence, multimedia, software engineering, computational science, and networking. To assist the students in their ventures, students are provided with extensive access to state-of-the art facilities.

BS Management Information Systems

The BS Management Information Systems program is a joint offering of DISCS and the School of Management. This program involves the study of the application of Computer Science to business and management processes and of the issues related to the use of information systems in an organization. Students in the program enroll in Computer Science courses, Management Engineering courses, and core MIS courses.

MS Computer Science

The MS Computer Science is a research-oriented degree and consequently requires full-time study. The curriculum consists of a set of required courses, electives, and major courses to provide the specialization within the program. Four tracks of specialization are available: Multimedia and Instructional Technology, Software Engineering, Computer Networks and Data Communications, and Computer Science Theory.

Master in Information Technology

The Master in Information Technology (MIT) is a non-thesis terminal program directed at information technology (IT) educators who need to upgrade their knowledge and skills. It is a content course, as opposed to a research course that provides educators with increased training in core computer concepts, theories, and technology. es.

Five Year BS-MS Programs (BSMIS-MSCS and BSCS-MSCS)

The 5-year BS-MS programs combine our existing undergraduate programs (BS Computer Science and BS Management Information Systems) with our graduate program (MS Computer Science). No revisions in either curriculum have been made and there are no credit overlaps between two degrees. The undergraduate degree will be awarded at the end of the student’s fourth year, while the graduate degree will be awarded at the end of the fifth year. In essence, the undergraduate students under the BS-MS program will take graduate courses during their senior year, so that a student can realistically complete his/her masters degree after an additional one year and two summers.

Department of Mathematics

BS Mathematics

This program gives students not only a solid foundation in pure (theoretical) mathematics, but also extensive exposure to applied areas, including actuarial science, operations research, scientific computing, statistics, and finance. The rigor, analytic thinking, and creativity instilled in graduates of BS Mathematics have made them leaders in academe, banking and finance, software development, insurance and management practice.

BS Applied Mathematics Major in Computational Science
   (5-year program)

The BS Applied Mathematics program incorporates information and communications technology (ICT) innovations in the learning of mathematics for multidisciplinary application. This pioneering program exposes students to modern computational methods and tools such as modeling and simulation and equips them to answer the scientific computing needs of research, business and industry.

BS-M Applied Mathematics major in Mathematical Finance

This pioneering program aims to produce graduates well versed in the modeling and economics of global and local financial markets. Students are exposed to a rigorous foundation in mathematical finance; they are also familiarized with business practices. Upper division classes are taught by a team of mathematics professors and finance practitioners, thus, giving students a competitive edge as potential employees of investment banks and other financial institutions. Students of this program graduate with an undergraduate degree at the end of their fourth year and a graduate degree at the end of their fifth year.

MS Mathematics

This course gives students a deeper and more comprehensive understanding of mathematics through special courses in analysis, algebra and combinatorics. Students may concentrate on theoretical or applied mathematics. The thesis introduces them to various aspects of research in mathematics. Graduates of this course are equipped to continue to doctoral studies in mathematics.

Master of Mathematics

This program is designed for college teachers and professionals. It offers a balance of theory and applications. This program has two tracks: Business, and Science and Engineering. Students are trained in the appropriate and effective use of mathematical methods. The MoM graduates who are in the college teaching profession are expected to gain a higher level of competency in teaching mathematics. The MoM graduates who are professionals are expected to be better prepared to apply quantitative and analytic methods in their field of specialization.

MS Mathematics Education

This program is primarily intended for elementary and high school teachers who desire a deeper understanding and exposure to both the basics and the innovations in math education. They are trained in the effective deployment of assessment, curriculum instruction, technology, and psychology in and out of the classroom. They also acquire depth in content through the study of advanced courses in mathematics.

PhD Mathematics

This program trains students to do research in either theoretical or applied mathematics. Students are exposed to significant results and trends in chosen fields of specialization aligned with the research interests of the faculty.

Department of Physics

BS Physics

This 4-year program produces graduates equipped with a thorough understanding of the practical and experimental principles of Physics as well as a detailed appreciation of the theoretical framework of these principles. Practical skills are developed with courses such as: computer aided design, introduction to computing, and engineering workshops practices. A detailed understanding of Physical principles is developed through rigorous coursework, laboratory instructions and student project culminating in a thesis.

BS Applied Physics with Applied Computer Systems
   (5-year double degree program)

This 5-year doubled-degree ladder program produces graduates equipped with a working knowledge of physics and computer hardware. Upon completion of the 4-year BS Applied Computer Systems (BS ACS) degree taken with the ECCE department. The fifth year enhances their knowledge of areas such as communications, computer interface design, and operating systems. This course was formerly known as BS Computer Engineering.

BS Physics / BS Materials Science and Engineering
   (5-year double degree program)

The BS Physics /BS Materials Science and Engineering (BS MSE) program is a 5- year double degree program where the student obtains a BS Physics degree after four years and a BS MSE after the fifth year. The BS Physics program provides a strong foundation on the physics of materials with specialized electives on materials. BS MSE integrates the knowledge and tools of chemistry and physics with engineering principles to design, fabricate and characterize improved and novel materials such as polymer composites, biodegradable plastics and biocompatible materials, longer-lasting paints and coatings and corrosion-resistant materials, and many others.

MS Physics

The Master of Science in Physics degree program is a 2-year course that covers a graduate physics curriculum with research.

Master of Physics

(Non-thesis) degree is for those who require a professional certification in physics.

Master of Physics Education

Geared to provide a thorough background in physics, develop teaching skills and promote participation in physics education. This non-thesis degree stresses active learning.

Straight BS/MS Physics
   (5-year program)

A 5-year course where undergraduate courses are covered in the 1st 4 years and graduate courses in the 5th year.

PhD Physics

The PhD in Physics program is designed to develop outstanding academic and industrial researchers. Its curriculum work relates to local research activities and current international developments in physics.
