On January 25, 2005, Jane McAuliffe,
College Dean of Georgetown University recognized three
outstanding faculty. One of them was Angel de Dios (BS
Chem '85), Associate Professor of Chemistry. Below is
the citation read during the Faculty Convocation:
With the gift to engage students of
all abilities and interests, challenging them with very
high standards, Angel C. de Dios, has influenced
hundreds of students through his exemplary teaching at
all levels of the curriculum. In particular, in his
General Chemistry course he dispels fears of chemistry
through a pedagogy that can even include guitar playing
and singing but, most importantly, transforms the
subject matter, incites interest, and encourages
students' own commitment of energy and creativity to
their study of the sciences. In the words of one
student, Angel "educates the whole person" by the
positive example he sets. Such words of praise apply to
his teaching in other courses as well, where students'
knowledge and experience vary widely but where, in each
case, his crisp and clear delivery of the subject matter
thoroughly engages them.
Such enthusiasm has translated into
strong undergraduate student involvement in research
projects in the chemistry department. Angel actively
mentors young researchers, and has co-authored eight
papers with undergraduate students. He has long served
as the Director of Undergraduate Studies providing
additional opportunities for students to benefit from
his mentorship.
The Dean of Georgetown College
proudly presents Angel C. de Dios this Award for
Excellence in Teaching.
