Students from the Loyola Schools garnered top spots in two IT contests organized by the students of UP Diliman, namely, the UP Diliman Sun Java Cup 2005 and the Quizzardry 2005, on March 3 and 4. Ateneo teams secured the first and third place in both contests.

The Sun Java Cup and the Quizzardry are annual events organized by the UP Cursor in connection with the College of Engineering’s celebration of IT Week.

During the Java Cup, the teams were led into one of two computer laboratories where they were given three hours to solve five problems. A different scoring system was used wherein teams that submitted correctly solved problems were given an early advantage. The coaches on the other hand were led to a room and updates on the scores were given every 15 minutes. Ateneo Team 3, composed of Miguel Arguelles (4 BS CS), Allan Espinosa (3 BS ECE) and Michael Tan (2 BS CS) won first place with 180 points in the UP Diliman Sun Java Cup 2005. A team from DLSU was declared 2nd place with 110 points while Ateneo Team 2, composed of Jino Noel (4 BS CS) and Paul Rivera (4 BS CS) tied in with a team from DLSU for third place with a total of 100 points.

The Quizzardry on the other hand, followed the usual format for a quiz bee with a few added details to keep things exciting. Only a top percentage of the teams would be able to make it to the succeeding rounds. The three teams Ateneo sent manage to make it to all three rounds, neck and neck with two other teams from UP Diliman. In the end, Ateneo Team 2, composed of Mark Punzalan (3 BS CS, team captain), Vanessa Gonzales (3 BS CS) and Randolph Espinosa (3 BS CS) were declared champions with a total of 144 points. A team from UP Diliman came in second with 116 points. Ateneo Team 3, composed of Eric Troy Uy (4 BS CS, team captain), Marc Lihan (3 BS CS) and Erwin Lee (3 BS MIS) garnered 96 points and won 3rd place.

Congratulations to them all!
