Depertment of EconomicsDescribing what he called the "master economist", Keynes once wrote: "He must reach a high standard in several different directions and must combine talents not often found together. He must be [sic] mathematician, historian, statesman, philosopher." With its traditional strength in the liberal arts, and its strong connections with the world of business and public sectors, the Department of Economics of Ateneo de Manila presents an excellent environment for developing such a combination of talents.
The following are the objectives of the Department of Economics:
- To build on what we have accomplished in the area of teaching and research in order to become a leading institution in our discipline
- To strengthen our mission to teach and train students in economic analysis and methodology in order to develop individuals who can contribute effectively to policy formulation, basic and advanced teaching in economics and research
- To develop further our capability and expertise in theory and empirical research, directed to the generation and communication of new knowledge and ideas in economics and to the effective design of policy in the country
Courses/Programs/Services OfferedThe undergraduate programs offered by the department include the Bachelor of Arts, major in Economics (Standard Program); Bachelor of Arts, major in Economics (Honors Program) and the Bachelor of Arts, major in Management Economics.
A.B. Economics
The A.B. Economics (Standard Program) is intended for students who want a liberal arts-oriented program with specific concentration on economics. The A.B. Economics (Honors Program), on the other hand, is meant for the students who wish to have a more technical and rigorous training in mathematics and economics. Both programs prepare the student for a productive career in government, industry, or the academe.
A.B. Management Economics
The program is designed to provide the qualified student with a well- balanced background in Management and Economics. The economics training enhances the ability to understand and evaluate the economic environment in which one functions. Management studies, meanwhile, provide an array of analytical and organizational skills which are indispensable in the formulation and implementation of suitable responses to economic challenges.
Minor in Economics
The Minor in Economics Program is for students who are interested in acquiring basic facility in economic theory. It provides an economics framework to complement the student's major field of specialization, allowing him/her to have greater appreciation of current social and economic concerns. The Minor requires 5 courses or 15 units in economics.
The Minor is open to all undergraduate students at the Loyola Schools, except those pursuing the AB Economics and AB Management Economics, and students with double-major status in the Department of Economics. To be admitted to the Minor program, students must have obtained a minimum grade of C in Eco 102 and an unweighted minimum average of 1.75 in all math courses taken at the time of application. Students must maintain an unweighted minimum average of C in all the required courses.
M.A. Economics
The graduate programs of the department were established to allow working professionals the opportunity to pursue quality graduate education in economics. The department offers a two-track Master of Arts, major in Economics Program. The first track is a thesis program, which culminates in the student's oral defense of his/her research work. The second track is a non-thesis program, where the student is required to prepare a research paper in a chosen area of specialization, but is not required to have an oral defense. Both graduate programs require 36 units of course work.
To qualify for admission to the degree program, an applicant must meet the following requirements:
- a bachelor’s degree from a college of good standing, with at least three units of economics and/or three units of mathematics, preferably calculus
- A general average in his/her undergraduate degree of “B”, 3.00 or its equivalent
- Acceptable scores in the entrance tests administered by the Office of the Graduate School and Services at the Ateneo de Manila University
- An interview with the Chair of the Department may be required.
