ATENEO CENTER FOR ASIAN STUDIES (ACAS)

Established in April 2001, the Ateneo Center for Asian Studies is a research center that promotes Asian Studies in the Ateneo de Manila University through multi-disciplinary research and other related activities.

Owing to the rapid changes in the region, the Ateneo de Manila faculty has become increasingly involved in doing Asia-related research. More than ever, a more comprehensive study and deeper understanding of Asia—its economies, histories, cultures, philosophies and political systems—are needed. The Center hopes to further increase the expertise of the faculty in Asian Studies. It also hopes to strengthen the presence of the Ateneo de Manila University in the region.

In the recent past, many countries in Asia have become vibrant and active players in the global community. Many others are following suit. As the world’s fastest growing region in the last couple of decades, Asia will continue to be at the forefront of the world’s attention in this new millennium. There is also a growing interdependence among these Asian countries where relations are ever-changing. For the Philippines, the need to understand her closest neighbors is important for advancing her national interest and regional stability. Given the growing regional integration emerging in this area, knowledge about Asia will enable the Philippines to play a more active and meaningful role in the region.
