POWER: A power outage occurred at the Balara
Grid from 9:20 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. Wednesday, 14 Feb 2007. Wear and tear
on the fuse cut-out to the Balara grid transformers caused the breakdown.
Affected units were the Grade School, Irwin Theatre, Blue Eagle Gym, College
Covered Courts, Communication Arts building and the Manila Observatory.
Except for Irwin Theatre, most of the units affected had access to a generator.
Meralco's emergency crew responded immediately but
the problem was determined to be internal to Ateneo. Unfortunately, needed
materials were not available. The needed fuse-outs had to be procured
from ACTech, one of Ateneo's electrical contractors. The University Physical
Plant Electrical Section managed to complete repairs only at 5:15 p.m.

Another outage occurred at the Barangka grid early
Sunday morning, 18 February from 2:00 a.m. to 5:40 p.m. Campus security
noticed smoke coming from Eliazo Residence Hall's transformer pad before
the power outage.
The duty guard sounded the alarm and Mr. Asterio
A. Sadia, head of the Electrical Section came to the site shortly
after to assess the problem.
Engr. Alfonso A. Matulac, University Electrical
consultant was also contacted. He went to the site Sunday morning. ACTech,
an electrical contractor was contacted. Fortunately, ACTech had
the high-tension cables. They were also able to mobilize workers to make
the repairs, despite it being a Sunday.

The repairs were completed in a day instead of a week
because materials were available. Engr. Matulac, the University Physical
Plant Electrical Section and ACTech are commended for a job well done.
