The Coeds "come home"

September 10, 2013

Almost two hundred coeds “came home” to the Ateneo de Manila University to attend the launching of the 40th year of coeducation in the Ateneo last weekend.

The “returnees” showed up in a celebration dubbed "40 Years, Half the Sky: Celebrating Coeducation in the Ateneo." They were led by 3 of the 6 female members of Class ’75, the first batch which graduated coeds who started out as exchange students.

The first full batch (those who completed full 4-year courses in the Ateneo) actually graduated in 1977, and this batch was well represented as well.

The event started out with a Thanksgiving Mass presided over by University President Fr. Jett Villarin SJ, who expressed his appreciation for the coeds and acknowledged their contribution to the Ateneo.

After the mass, an exhibit on memorabilia on Ateneo’s road to coeducation was opened by no less than Chief Justice Ma. Lourdes Sereno (ABEco’80) who emphasized that the school’s female graduates should also follow the Ateneo mold and be “women for others.”

"Ang ibig sabihin ng 'for others' ay tunay at tuluyan na pagbubukas ng sarili para sa kapwa," Sereno said.

A short program was also held after this wherein the coeds were treated to cocktails, raffle prizes and various giveaways that made the fun event even more enjoyable. The various batches present then donated to a scholarship fund for coeds.

The organizing committee for the event was co-chaired by Ateneo Vice President for the Professional Schools Ma. Antonette Angeles, herself a member of Class 77, and CEO and President of the Filinvest Group Joji Gotianun-Yap of Class 75.

Coeducation in the Ateneo started out in in 1973, 114 years after Ateneo was established. The first batch of female students included 127 freshmen and 35 enrolled in upper year levels.
In 1975, the first six women transferees graduated from Ateneo.

They were Ma. Lorenzana  Dalupan-Palm (AB Sociology-Anthropology), Vivian Dy-Gordon (BS Management), Lourdes Josephine Gotianun-Yap (BS Management), Ma. Barbara Jacinto-Pineda (AB Sociology-Anthropology), Ma. Sophia Lizares-Bodegon (AB Sociology-Anthropology), and Nina Picache-King (BS Management).

From 1976 to 2013, there have been 2,336 women who graduated with honors: 37 summa cum laude, 227 magna cum laude, 929 cum laude, and 1,349 honorable mention.
