Fidel Valdez Ramos, 1928-2022

Ateneo de Manila University is one with the entire Filipino nation in mourning the death of former President Fidel Valdez Ramos.
Ramos, the nation’s 12th chief executive, was a steady hand at a time when the Philippines was emerging from the chaos of the 1980s, readying to enter the new millennium. Under his watch, the country achieved remarkable economic growth, took its rightful place in the global community, and made major steps towards peace and reconciliation.
FVR was the nation’s top cheerleader. His primary battlecry, “kaya natin ‘to,” rallied the nation behind the mission of rising above our differences, embracing change, and ensuring a more equitable, just, and humane society as it welcomed the dawn of the new millennium. He worked to show that democracy and development go hand in hand, if we all just worked together.
President Ramos made us believe in ourselves again: that we, Filipinos, can overcome the odds and succeed, both at home and on the world stage.
Because of his outstanding stewardship of the nation, and his role in the defense of our democracy, Ateneo de Manila conferred upon him the degree of Doctor of Humanities, honoris causa, back in 1997. FVR also studied at the Ateneo Graduate School of Business, completing a Masters in Business Administration in 1980. Ateneo is honored and privileged to consider FVR as our alumnus.
His skillful leadership, deep sense of duty, and unwavering love for the country will be forever in the hearts and minds of Filipinos.
We extend our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones.
May FVR rest in peace.
