"Colonialism & Modernity: Re-mapping Philippine Histories" Book Launch
ABOUT THE BOOK
Colonialism and Modernity: Re-mapping Philippine Histories brings together the transdisciplinary work of Filipino, Filipino-American, and Japanese scholars who examine situations and histories of colonial modernity relating to the Philippines and its U.S.-based diaspora in the American-colonial and neo-colonial/post-independence periods. Coming from different disciplines (History, Literary and Cultural Studies, Anthropology, Economic History, Ethnomusicology) and area studies traditions (Philippine/Southeast Asian Studies, American Studies, and East Asian Studies), the authors experiment with forms of inquiry from other disciplines to probe questions of political economy, critical historiography, nationalist politics, and colonial education. Topically, the essays range widely: from debt and credit in Filipino American fiction and Hollywood film to the ‘highland-lowland dichotomy’ in Philippine cultural history and Renato Constantino’s critical history-writing; from Philippine freemasonry in the revolutionary period and Manuel Quezon’s political liminality as Commonwealth President to the history of American colonial pedagogy in the Muslim South and the ‘static narratives’ of post-independence history textbooks. Theoretically, as the editorial essay by Oscar V. Campomanes explains, this volume forms part of the effort, across various fields, to re-map histories of the past as histories of the present, attuned to and working out of the contradictory coupling of colonialism and modernity in the Philippine historical experience.
The launch will be on 7 November 2022, Monday, 5:00 pm, onsite at Faber Hall Room 101, Ateneo de Manila University, Katipunan Avenue, Loyola Heights, Quezon City and online via Zoom.
