First Aid for Mental Health in the School Setting
Psychological First Aid (PFA) is a basic intervention protocol for responding to people in distress. Initially developed as a first response for natural and man-made disasters, PFA was adapted for use as a first response for students in distress. This includes responding to a student who may be showing signs of depression, panic attacks, bouts of crying, as well as those who experienced distressing events. In this program participants will be able to learn how psychological distress looks like, empathic listening, and the 4-step PFA model. In addition, participants will also learn skills in basic coping strategies that can be taught to children and adolescents. Recognizing and acknowledging compassion fatigue among those who provide emotional support, as well as the importance of self-care in preventing compassion fatigue and burnout.
