Planting bougainvilleas on campus: Minimizing water usage through less water-dependent plants

Ateneo de Manila University pursues a policy of energy efficiency and conservation. Furthermore, through standardized sustainability measures and procedures, the University promotes water-conserving measures by adopting green and efficient technologies for minimizing the wastage of water and promoting water recycling.
In addition, the University plants bougainvillea, which line up the walkways of the SEC buildings. As low-water demand plants, they are not only a beauty to behold but are also water-conserving.
Finally, in Xavier Hall are the prickly pear cacti, which like the bougainvilleas, are hardy tropical plants that require little watering and best thrive in tropical climates.
