Congratulations to the 40th National Book Awards Winners in the School of Social Sciences!

The Office of the Dean of the School of Social Sciences joins the Department of Sociology and Anthropology and the Institute of Philippine Culture in congratulating Dr. Fernando N. Zialcita (Professor Emeritus, Department of Sociology and Anthropology, and Research Associate, Institute of Philippine Culture) and Mr. Erik Akpedonu (Research Associate, Institute of Philippine Culture) for receiving the:

Alfonso T. Ongpin Prize for Best Book on Art
for "Endangered Splendor: Manila’s Architectural Heritage, 1571-1960" 
(Authors: Fernando Zialcita & Erik Akpedonu with Victor B. Venida)

"Endangered Splendor: Manila’s Architectural Heritage, 1571-1960" also won the "Best Book Design" for Mr. Ali Figueroa & Mr. Erik Akpedonu.

The book, the result of a study generously funded by the Society for the Preservation and Promotion of Philippine Culture, Inc., was published by the Ateneo de Manila University Press, which was declared "Publisher of the Year" at the National Book Awards. The awarding ceremony was held on May 13, 2023 at the Metropolitan Theater in Manila.

The National Book Awards is an annual prize given by the National Book Development Board and the Manila Critics Circle. It honors the most prestigious book titles written, designed, and published in the Philippines. Previous winners of the National Book Awards from the School of Social Sciences include Prof. Ambeth Ocampo (repeat winner, including Rizal Without the Overcoat), Dr. Jowel Canuday (Bakwit: The Power of the Displaced), Dr. Stephanie Coo (Clothing the Colony: 19th century Philippine Sartorial Culture, 1820-1896), and Prof. Em. Dr. Fernando Ziaclita, PhD (repeat winner, including Authentic Though Not Exotic: Essays on Filipino Identity).
