Ateneo de Manila Grade School chess wizards Arjay Co (4-Diego Silang) and Darren Uy (6-Xavier) qualified in the Under-10 and U12 age group categories, respectively, of the National Age Group Chess Championships (NAGCC) qualifying legs that were held from March 27 to April 17, 2021 using the Tornelo online platform. As such, they will advance to the NAGCC semifinal round to be held on May 14, 2021.

Arjay ranked 6th overall during the U10-Boys Marinduque South Luzon qualifying leg held on March 28, 2021, and 4th overall during the U10-Boys Zamboanga Sultans Mindanao qualifying leg held on April 17, 2021. Meanwhile, Darren placed 15th overall during the U12-B Hon. Gasataya Visayas qualifying leg.

The qualifying legs were organized by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines in close cooperation with the Philippine Sports Commission. Each leg showcased the best and strongest chess players of the country in their respective age groups, who played seven grueling, intense and nerve-wracking rounds of chess under a 10-minute plus 5-second increment time control, following the strict FIDE Online Chess Regulations.  For the coming semifinals rounds, they will be battling in a 15-minute plus 5-second increment time control under a 7-round Swiss system mode of play, again using the online Tornelo platform.

If they qualify in the semifinals, they will earn the right to play in the Grand Finals to be held on June 4-9, 2021 under a hybrid platform with a time control of 60-min plus 30-sec increment. Grand finals champions will proudly represent the Philippines in the Asia and World age group chess championships to be organized by FIDE, and will be awarded a National Master norm or Candidate Master title.

Arjay and Darren are members of the Ateneo Grade School Chess Varsity Team under Coach Joan Datu. They are also personally trained and closely assisted by John Eric Margarito and Godfrey Villamor.
