ANWW17 Call for Applications

December 13, 2018
The Ateneo Institute of Literary Arts and Practices (AILAP) is accepting applications for the 17th Ateneo National Writers Workshop (ANWW17), which will  be held on 3 – 8 June 2019 at the Ateneo de Manila University. For this year, the workshop focuses on thinking of the child in literature. In contrast to the conventional view of the child as the target reader of literature, we seek to complicate the child as a possibility of poetics and imagination. Works such as Genoveva E. Matute’s “Paglalayag sa Puso ng Isang Bata,” Pedro Dandan’s “May Buhay sa Looban,” Edgardo M. Reyes’s “Hindi Abot ng Kawalang Malay,” Rogelio Sicat’s “Impeng Negro,” and Jun Cruz Reyes’s  “Utos ng Hari,” among others serve as examples.
Interested applicants must submit a portfolio of any of the following: [a] five to ten (5 - 10) poems; [b] two to three (2 - 3) short stories, each with 10 to 25 pages; [c] two to three (2 - 3) literary essays, each with 10 to 25 pages; and [d] one to two (1 - 2) one-act plays, each with 15 to 25 pages. In addition, each portfolio must include a 2 to 3 page introductory essay detailing the conceptual project of the submitted portfolio.
The portfolios may be in Filipino or English. Each portfoliomust be computerized on 8.5 x 11” bond paper, with 1” margin on all sides, in Times New Roman, size 12, double-spaced (with exception to poetry, which can be submitted single-spaced). The page number must be indicated at the footer.
The portfolio must have a title page bearing the author’s pseudonym and a table of contents. The author’s real name should not appear anywhere in the portfolio. Portfolios should be submitted in both PDF and Word formats, along with separate PDF and Word versions of the accomplished application form. The application form may be downloaded at
Applications must be emailed to with the subject “ANWW17: [applicant’s last name] – [form]” (e.g., “ANWW17: Dela Cruz – Poetry”).
The deadline for submission is 17 February 2019. Twelve fellows will be chosen from all over the country. Food and accommodations will be provided. For more information, call 426-6001 loc. 5320 or e-mail or
