National Conference for Religious Educators X

August 29, 2017

In 2007, the Theology Department of the School of Humanities of the Ateneo de Manila University, in consultation with graduates from its Formation Institute for Religion Educators (FIRE) and Catholic schools throughout the nation, recognized that the community of religion educators and catechists needed knowledge and skills training and updating. The result was a refresher course which allowed faculty from the Theology Department to support theology teachers and religious educators with updated knowledge and new ways of approaching religious education. The first Refresher Course reflected the need for an annual opportunity for religious educators to come together to share, learn, and grow in their vocation. Since then, it has expanded into an annual opportunity for religious educators to reflect on relevant and current theological issues in light of the signs of the times. Every year since 2007 (except for 2009 when the flooding caused by Typhoon Ondoy forced it to be cancelled), there has been a refresher course anticipated by theologians, religion and Christian Living Education teachers, and catechists.

The year 2010 featured a special version of the Refresher Course as the department entered into a joint effort with Ateneo de Cagayan-Xavier University in Cagayan de Oro. This was organized to provide an opportunity for more religious educators from Mindanao to attend.

In 2013, on its 6th year, the Refresher Course’s name was changed to the National Conference for Religious Educators (NCRE) to reflect its growing popularity as a communal gathering of religious educators and its expanded focus on contemporary topics in the Church and the world.

The year 2016 brought with it the successful launch of the League of Catechists and Religious Educators of the Philippines, Inc. (LCREP), a professional organization duly registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), in order to address the clamor for a professional organization for religious educators and catechists.

Now on its tenth year, the NCRE X will take place at the Ateneo campus this October 21-22, 2017 (Saturday-Sunday), with the theme: “Catechesis and Religious Education 20 Years After the CFC: We Remember, We Celebrate, We Believe.” It will be a time for religious educators and catechists to look back at the past with gratitude, to savor and celebrate the present, and to look forward to the future, together with the entire Philippine Church. While it is a celebration of ten years of the NCRE, it is also a celebration of 20 years of our national catechism, the Catechism for Filipino Catholics (CFC).

For these reasons, the department has invited The Most Reverend Roberto Mallari, D.D., Bishop of San Jose City, Nueva Ecija and The Reverend Salvatore Putzu, SDB, for the plenary session. Bishop Mallari is the chairman of the CBCP Episcopal Commission on Catechesis and Catholic Education (ECCCE). Father Putzu established Word & Life Publications and was involved in the production of the CFC. The reactor for the plenary is the department’s very own, Dr. Patricia P. Lambino. Dr. Lambino did her Ph.D. dissertation on the development of the CFC, and is currently the director of the Formation Institute for Religion Educators (FIRE), the masteral degree program of the department.

The next 3 sessions will be break-out sessions of 5 different talks each, on doctrinal, moral, and worship topics, with a final integration session.

Apart from the talks, there will be a good number of exhibitors (book sellers and merchandisers) at the conference site, including Jesuit Communications, Word & Life Publications and Claretian Publications. As an added treat, the choirs Bukas Palad and Hangad will perform during the conference.

Members of LCREP (League of Catechists and Religious Educators of the Philippines) will hold their first General Assembly and Fellowship Night on October 21, Saturday, beginning at 5 pm, immediately following the last session. Dinner will be served.
