The Ateneo Innovation Center recently deployed two solar rainwater systems in Valenzuela City. During rainy season, when the residents have difficulty in getting clean water, rain water can be stored in drums and filtered for drinking. Ateneo Innovation Center partnered with the Foundation for the Development for the Urban Poor (FDUP) and in coordination with the Valenzuela City DRRMO and the homeowners association of barangays Coloong (1600 L capacity) and Mapulang Lupa (2000 L capacity). Solar panels provide electricity to run ultraviolet lamp filters for disinfecting the water, LED lights, and cellphones charging. AIC designed manual PVC pumps that the residence built to push the rainwater through mechanical filters, eliminating the elevated tanks needed in a gravity fed design. AIC has installed over 100 Solar Rain systems countrywide in an effort to enhance local community self sufficiency and resilience in times of disaster.
