Biography: 
Michael Syson, or Mike, is a student, a teacher, and a social entrepreneur. He teaches Japanese and Chinese Language and Culture at the Ateneo de Manila University, and works with government, industry, and academe, on his social business, Usbong, where he and his team strive to help people, even non-technical people, build their own mobile apps to solve issues in efficiency, intensity, and longevity vis-à-vis time. Furthermore, two key areas that they focus on include education and healthcare.
 
Mike finished with a B.Sc. in Computer Science and a Minor in Japanese Studies at the Ateneo de Manila University. He also studied in Japan as an exchange student for two semesters at Kansai Gaidai University, where he received a diploma in Asian Studies. In April 2007, he passed the PhilNITS (Philippine National IT Standards) - Fundamental Engineer (FE) exam. After working in the industry, both locally and in Japan, he proceeded to graduate school and completed in 2011 his M.Sc. in Computer Science at the Ateneo de Manila University. In the same year, he and his team also won the Ateneo Socio-Civic Engagement for National Development (ASCEND) Awards for the School of Science and Engineering. Right now, he is pursuing Ph.D. studies in Computer Science at the Ateneo. Besides English and Filipino, Mike speaks Nihongo, Mandarin (working knowledge), and Spanish (elementary), having passed the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) Level 1, the Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (HSK) Level 4, and the BBC Languages: Mi Vida Loca, Spanish for Beginners Test.
